Markup is profit as a percentage of cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price: (price − cost) ÷ price. The same dollar profit gives a bigger markup number than margin number — a 50% markup is only a 33% margin. Mixing the two up is one of the most common pricing mistakes when reselling.
