The instinct that a bigger package is automatically the cheaper option per ounce is usually right — but not always, and the exceptions aren't random. Mismatched units on the shelf label

Many stores post a unit price directly on the shelf tag, which is genuinely useful — except when two competing products list their unit price in different units. One brand shows price per ounce, the neighboring brand shows price per pound, or one shows price per item while a multi-pack shows price per pack rather than per item inside it. Side by side, the numbers look directly comparable when they aren't, and a quick glance can easily favor the more expensive option just because its number happens to look smaller.

The "value size" that isn't

Larger packaging carries an assumption of better value baked into the words themselves — "family size," "bulk," "value pack." That assumption holds often enough that it's easy to stop checking. But packaging costs, promotional cycles, and shrinkflation (reducing package size while holding price steady) all mean the assumption doesn't hold universally. It's common enough for a mid-size package to actually beat the largest size per unit, particularly right after a manufacturer has quietly resized their "large" option without adjusting the price to match.

Sale pricing on the small size only

A promotional discount often applies to just one size in a product line — frequently the smaller one, since it's cheaper for the store to discount in absolute terms. When that happens, the "on sale" small size can genuinely beat the everyday price of the large size per unit, even though the large size would normally win. Non-standard shapes and fill

Some packaging is intentionally shaped or filled in a way that makes visual volume comparison unreliable — a wider, shorter container that looks smaller than a tall, narrow one despite holding the same or more product, or a bag that isn't fully packed to the top. None of this shows up in a glance at shelf height; it only shows up when comparing the actual weight or volume printed on the label.
